Hand Forged Knives ![]()
Ebony Handled Skinner.
This is my very first forged knife. It is also my very first forged project, ever. It is forged from 3/8" mild steel rod, when hammered on one side the steel curls into a banana shape. Cutting and grinding the point was the next logical step.
Handle scales are made of very old ebony wood my father gave me. They are pinned in place with hand fashioned copper pins. Finger guard is steel hard soldered in place.
Being as it is mild steel, the edge doesn't hold up at all and at best can be used as a letter opener.Basket Twist Pommel
This crazy looking piece is a composite knife. The blade is made from a large roller bearing pin hammered into shape. The bearing pin must have been made from a real high carbon steel as it took a long time to get forged. The handle is mild steel bar stock with a four rod basket twist pommel. After all the welding of the pieces were accomplished, the knife got selective heat treating for a hard keen edge and durable tough spine. I wrapped the handle with some thin leather and twisted copper wire.
